Homemade Banana chips or wafers | How to make Banana Chips

Banana chips

Homemade Banana chips or wafers are a delicious crispy fried snack prepared from raw bananas and fried in coconut oil. It is a popular food enjoyed by people all over the world, especially in Kerala, during the cold winter months.

It is thought to have originated in Kerala and is often made with Kerala’s raw nendran banana variety. However, we can make them with any raw banana type you have on hand as I did with the local variety from our farm.

We also call them Kele ke chips in Hindi, Ethakka upperi in Malayalam, Balekayi chips in Kannada, and plantain chips most of the time.

These banana chips have a crunchy, firm texture and are very appetizing, enticing to people of all ages. These fritters are a popular delicacy in Kerala, found everywhere from street sellers to high-end restaurants.

These are nutritious, gluten-free, and vegan, and they commonly consume these while fasting.

We usually fry them in coconut oil; However, due to a lack of it, I substituted vegetable oil in this recipe.

The taste of banana bursts in the mouth, backed by a subtle taste of the oil. I used salt and pepper to season them, but we could also add red chili powder or other spices.

The bananas we choose are the most essential factor in getting crispy, delicious chips. In order to get the same textures, they must be raw, rough, and rigid. We can also prepare using ripe nendran bananas, which have a subtle sweetness in them.

When we immerse them in salt water for a while or pour the thick salt solution into the hot oil surrounding the fritters, they turn very crispy. We can turn them a traditional yellow color by soaking them in turmeric. Rather than putting the salt solution into the heated oil, I like to soak them in salt and turmeric beforehand and then deep fry.

Serve these delicious fritters as a teatime snack or munch on them while watching television.
