MAJJIGE HULI RECIPE | HOW TO MAKE CUCUMBER YOGURT CURRY

Majjige huli

Majige Huli | Cucumber yogurt curry – Tasty and rich South Indian style curd or yogurt-based curry made with coconut. Majjige Huli is the delicacy of Mangalore, Karnataka, and is very popular in Tamil Nadu and Kerala as well.

This dish has a unique authentic taste with a mixture of flavors prepared with very basic ingredients.

The sourness of curd with moderately spiced and the sweetness induced from the coconut, tempered with cumin and urad dal makes this Majjige Huli the ideal dish to make.

We call this dish Majjige Huli in Kannada, Majjige being the curd and Huli meaning sour. In Tamil, we call it Mor Kulambu or Mor Kuzhambu, where Mor is curd and Kuzhambu is the thick gravy.

Commonly we use cucumber, Mangalore cucumber, ash gourd, bottle gourd in the dish. Although, we can also use brinjal, lady’s finger, radish, capsicum in the dish.

However, except for the cucumber, we must soft cook the vegetables beforehand and added to the curry. I have used cucumber in this recipe.

It is an easy and quick dish one can prepare with ease in minimal steps. This is the best curry to make in the summers to beat the heat.

Coconut is the key ingredient of this dish, which gives richness and sweetness to the dish. The roasted chana adds in the thickness and slight flavor. Coriander gives color and taste. Cumin gives in the added flavor. Likewise, chilies add spiciness to the recipe. This dish is complete when it is tempered with urad dal, mustard seeds, and cumin.

This quick, easy yet delicious Majjige Huli tastes amazing with plain rice and is for sure the best curry recipe for summers.
