MAJJIGE HULI RECIPE | HOW TO MAKE CUCUMBER YOGURT CURRY

Majige Huli | Cucumber yogurt curry – Tasty and rich South Indian style curd or yogurt-based curry made with coconut. Majjige Huli is the delicacy of Mangalore, Karnataka, and is very popular in Tamil Nadu and Kerala as well.
This dish has a unique authentic taste with a mixture of flavors prepared with very basic ingredients.
The sourness of curd with moderately spiced and the sweetness induced from the coconut, tempered with cumin and urad dal makes this Majjige Huli the ideal dish to make.
We call this dish Majjige Huli in Kannada, Majjige being the curd and Huli meaning sour. In Tamil, we call it Mor Kulambu or Mor Kuzhambu, where Mor is curd and Kuzhambu is the thick gravy.
Commonly we use cucumber, Mangalore cucumber, ash gourd, bottle gourd in the dish. Although, we can also use brinjal, lady’s finger, radish, capsicum in the dish.
However, except for the cucumber, we must soft cook the vegetables beforehand and added to the curry. I have used cucumber in this recipe.
It is an easy and quick dish one can prepare with ease in minimal steps. This is the best curry to make in the summers to beat the heat.

Coconut is the key ingredient of this dish, which gives richness and sweetness to the dish. The roasted chana adds in the thickness and slight flavor. Coriander gives color and taste. Cumin gives in the added flavor. Likewise, chilies add spiciness to the recipe. This dish is complete when it is tempered with urad dal, mustard seeds, and cumin.

How to make Majjige Huli
- Clean, peel, and dice the cucumbers into cubes.

2. Add grated coconut, green chilies, roasted chana dal, cumin, coriander leaves, and salt to a blender and blend it into a smooth paste.



3. Pour the blended mixture into the bowl containing diced cucumbers. Mix well

4. Add whisked curd and mix it well till all the curd is incorporated into the mixture.

5. For Tempering – Heat oil, and add mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter.

6. Add in cumin seeds and urad dal. Roast the urad dal until they turn golden brown.

7. Add a few curry leaves and pour the tempering over the curd mixture.


8. Serve this delicious cucumber-yogurt curry with plain rice.


Majjige Huli
Ingredients
- 1 cup Freshly grated coconut
- 4-5 Green chilies
- 1 tbsp Chana dal
- 1 tbsp Cumin
- 1 cup Coriander leaves
- 1 tsp Salt
- 3 cups Curd
- 1 Cucumber
- 1 tsp Oil
- ¼ tsp Mustard seeds
- ½ tsp Cumin
- 1 tbsp Urad dal
- few Curry leaves
Instructions
